Description

Color pollution near urban areas in the night sky shooting is a common problem for the night sky photographers. Kenko STARRY NIGHT filter effectively reduces light coming from the city lights and illuminations, thus making the image more natural and high contrast.

Specifically designed and for night sky shooting, this filter is a must-have for astrophotography.

The importance of light pollution cut filters

Light pollution is a real issue to deal with when shooting night sky. In fact, when capturing a starry sky the amount of light pollution from light sources, like the shimmering illuminations from the city below in the distance, could make the sky look too bright, the light from the stars being drown out, and create color shift appear all over the final image.

The Starry Night filter will efficiently cut off light pollution to get you a clearer, more natural and realistic image of a starry sky.

Particularly, light pollution from sodium or mercury lighting can results in an orange-yellowish or greenish color on your final image.

The use of a light pollution cut filter, like Kenko STARRY NIGHT, makes it possible to suppress unwanted color from appearing on the final image, for a more natural and realistic color reproduction of a starry-night sky.

A must-have for astrophotography with wide-angle lenses

Unlike other light pollution cut filters, Kenko STARRY NIGHT filter perform great results, free from color shift, even with wide-angle lenses, thus being a must-have filter for astrophotography as well.

Easier post processing

Light pollution cut filters also have the merit to make post processing of RAW images a lot easier.

A truthful color reproduction on the final image will significantly reduce the amount of post processing work with image. In the same way, this filter proves to be of great help in reducing the amount of time needed in the difficult post processing work of the time-lapse footage.

Filter frame

Kenko STARRY NIGHT frame incorporates a knurled edge on both sides. It makes the filter easy and smooth to attach and detach, and guarantees a firmer grip on the filter frame. Lens cap can be also attached on the front side of the filter. Moreover, the ultra-thin frame of this filter is designed to avoid vignetting even with wide-angle lenses.

Please note that

  • The mixture of lights from different light sources makes it extremely difficult for light pollution cut filters to cut off all the amount of light pollution. Therefore, despite their high effectiveness, light pollution cut filters should not be intended to be able to suppress all light pollution from sodium and mercury lighting with an accuracy of 100%.
  • Light pollution cut filter reduces the amount of light entering the lens.
  • When using Kenko STARRY NIGHT filter, you can get the proper white balance with AWB (Auto White Balance) mode as well, and set color temperature, or select the desired light mode (ex. fluorescent light mode, etc) according to your preference.
  • The exposure factor of Kenko STARRY NIGHT filter is 1/3 stop. Therefore, when shooting a starry sky etc. with manual exposure, be aware that if you shoot with the same settings as when shooting without the filter, the image will result underexposed.
  • When shooting a starry night etc. with exposure set to Program Auto (P), Aperture Priority Auto (A/Av), or Shutter Speed Priority Auto (S/Tv), the exposure is adjusted on the camera side.
